Utilities and telecoms at most risk in a lost European decade, says Fitch
MADRID, MAY 08 (Bolsamania.com/BMS) .- The utility and telecommunication sectors would be among the most at risk in a lost decade, Fitch Ratings concludes in a report that looks at the effects a Japan-style lost decade in Europe would have on corporations. Meanwhile, "the gaming sector could benefit from deregulation as governments search for ways to increase tax revenues." "A decade of zero or low growth in Europe would weigh on most of the continent's corporate sector, but the scale of the impact would vary significantly," Fitch Ratings said. Utilities and telecoms would be most at risk due to their exposure to large developed markets. They would also face the risk of additional taxation and further regulatory intervention if governments took action to ensure bills remained affordable for consumers. "The five largest Fitch-rated utilities -Electricite de France, Enel, E.ON, Iberdrola and RWE- all have stubbornly high net debt, leaving them with limited rating headroom if conditions deteriorate further," Fitch said. Nonetheless, a lost decade is not Fitch Ratings' base-case scenario for Europe as it expects modest growth to retun in 2014. SC
